Page Commits to Husker Women

The Nebraska women’s basketball team has landed a 6-foot-two inch point guard from Wamego, Kansas. Kaylee Page averaged 21 points and eight rebounds and led the Red Raiders to the Class 4-A Kansas state championship last year. She’ll join the Huskers in 2014.

Huskers Finish Second on NWCA Academic List

The Nebraska wrestling team earned runner-up academic accolades from the National Wrestling Coaches Association when the NWCA announced its annual Division I All-Academic Top 30 Teams for the 2012-13 season on Monday.

The Huskers compiled a 3.32 grade-point average, finishing behind Harvard’s 3.42 GPA. Last season NU achieved the top honor by edging the Crimson. Stanford, Indiana and Virginia round out this year’s top five.

The team GPA was determined using a system that includes 12 student-athletes from each program. A total of 10 of these came from the wrestlers that were entries in the NCAA tournament conference qualifier. If teams had less than 10 entries for their respective qualifier, they were allowed to fill those spots with wrestlers that competed in at least one varsity dual during the season.

On Saturday, senior Josh Ihnen was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large Team for his work in the classroom during the 2012-13 school year. Ihnen carried a 3.87 GPA in business and garnered academic all-conference honors on four occasions.

On the mat, Nebraska finished 13th at the NCAA Championships with 38 points after compiling an 11-6 dual record. Sophomore Robert Kokesh (174) led the Huskers, finishing third, while James Green (157) garnered All-America honors for the second consecutive season with a seventh-place finish.

Huskers Falter in Home Finale

With a shot at the No. 2 seed at the Big Ten Tournament on the line, the Nebraska baseball team (25-28, 15-9 Big Ten) was unable to take care of business on Saturday afternoon at Hawks Field. The Huskers dropped a 19-9 decision to the Michigan Wolverines (29-25, 14-10 Big Ten).
The Huskers could do no worse than the No. 3 seed in the tournament coming into the game and will face the No. 6 seed Wolverines in the opening round of the tournament, as the Wolverines punched their ticket with the win on Saturday at Hawks Field.
The two teams will play the second game of the tournament on Wednesday at 3:35 p.m. in Minneapolis, Minn., at Target Field. No. 4 Illinois and No. 5 Minnesota will play the opener at 12:05 p.m. on Wednesday.
Nebraska’s offense put up nine runs for the second straight game on Saturday and registered double-digit hits for the fifth straight game with 10 on the afternoon, but were unable to keep up with the Wolverine offense. Husker pitching gave up a season-high 19 runs on season-high 23 hits, the first time all season the Huskers have given up 20 or more hits.
Five Wolverines notched at least three hits on the day, including a four-hit game from both Travis Maezes and Cole Martin.

Sophomore Pat Kelly produced three hits for the second straight game, ending the series with a 7-for-14 performance at the plate with five RBIs. Chad Christensen was the only other Husker with a multi-hit day, as the totaled his 239th and 240th career hits, tying him with Alex Gordon for ninth all-time in Nebraska history.

Michigan jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with three runs in the first and a run in the second. The Huskers answered in the bottom of the fourth with a four spot, with NU stringing together three-straight two-out singles.

Needing a win to qualify for the league tournament, the Wolverines combined to score 10 runs over the fifth and sixth inning that put them ahead 14-5. Michigan put the game away for good with five runs in the top of the eighth.

The Huskers never stopped fighting, as NU plated four runs in the bottom of the ninth after entering the inning in a 19-5 hole.

The Huskers will head to Minneapolis on Monday and practice at Target Field on Tuesday in preparation for the league tournament. Greg Sharpe and Lane Grindle will have the call of every game of the tournament on the Husker Sports Network, including for free on Huskers.com. The Big Ten Network will also carry every game of the tournament live.

Hooper Earns Spot on USA Basketball World University Games Roster

Nebraska's Jordan Hooper earned a position on USA Basketball's 12-player roster for the Women's World University Games, USA Basketball announced on Sunday.
Hooper, a 6-2 forward from Alliance, Neb., captured her first roster spot with USA Basketball in her first trip to a trials. The two-time All-American has powered Nebraska to back-to-back NCAA tournaments, including a trip to the NCAA Sweet 16 as a junior in 2013.
Hooper, a two-time first-team All-Big Ten selection, earned a spot on USA Basketball's Women's World University Games Team after three days (May 16-18) of intense competition among 33 of the nation's top collegians at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
The U.S. Women's Basketball Junior National Team Committee chose the select squad that will represent the United States at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia, July 8-15. Hooper and the other 11 members of the U.S. team will meet again for training at the USOC June 25-July 1.
"I am really excited," Hooper said. "I didn't really think I had much of a chance to make the team honestly, because there were so many great players, and I didn't really feel like I played that well the first two days. But I made up my mind from the beginning to just go out and play hard and do my best, and I think that's what the coaches liked about me."
Hooper, who will sporting No. 10 for USA Basketball, is one of five members of the 2013 USA Basketball Women's World University Games Team who will be making their first appearances on a U.S. squad. Shoni Schimmel (Louisville), Aaryn Ellenberg (Oklahoma), Crystal Bradford (Central Michigan) and Tricia Liston (Duke) all join Hooper as first-timers on the U.S. team.
The other seven members of the squad have multiple years of a experience with USA Basketball, including Ariel Massengale (Tennessee), Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis (UConn), Bria Hartley (UConn), ReShanda Gray (Cal), Cassie Harberts (USC), Theresa Plaisance (LSU) and Odyssey Sims (Baylor). The team will be coached by Sherri Coale (Oklahoma) with help from assistants Brian Giorgis (Marist) and Coquese Washington (Penn State).
"It is a great opportunity," Hooper said. "I am just going to try to make the most of it and enjoy the experience. I'm really honored to get a chance to represent the United States at the international level for the first time."

Three Huskers Earn Academic All-District Honors

Three University of Nebraska student-athletes were honored today, as they were selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VII At-Large teams. Gymnast Emily Wong was selected on the women’s at-large squad, while wrestler Josh Inhen and golfer Jordan Reinertson were chosen for the men’s team.
In all, 11 first-team selections on both the men’s and women’s sides were chosen from a nine-state district which also encompasses Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, New Mexico, Texas and Wyoming. All three student-athletes will advance to the national ballot, looking to extend Nebraska’s NCAA-leading number of Academic All-Americans. Nebraska has 302 all-time CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, including three during the 2012-13 campaign.
Ihnen, a senior from Sheldon, Iowa, was a standout on and off the mat during his Husker career. A four-time NCAA qualifier, he earned All-America honors in 2012, and is one of only 21 wrestlers in school history to record at least 100 wins. This season, he posted a 27-8 record at 184 pounds, including two pins, six technical falls and five major decisions. He carried a 3.87 GPA in business and a four-time academic all-conference selection. He was also a finalist for UNL Male Student-Athlete of the Year in 2013.
Reinertson, a senior from Gibbon, Neb., has been a mainstay near the top of the Husker men’s golf lineup the past two seasons. This year, he played in 27 rounds and averaged a 75.96 for NU, including a season-best round of 70. Off the course, he carries a 3.93 GPA with a double major in finance and business and was Nebraska’s Big Ten Sportsmanship recipient in 2012 and was also a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar in 2011-12. He graduated from UNL earlier this month.
Wong will enter her senior year as one of the nation’s top gymnasts. The Grand Forks, N.D., native is an eight-time All-American who placed third at the 2013 NCAA Championships in the all-around and on floor exercise. She has won seven events at the Big Ten Championships the past two years, including the all-around title in each of the past two years. In the classroom, she carries a 3.92 GPA in nutrition science and has earned first-team Academic All-Big Ten accolades in both 2012 and 2013.

Danger Down Calvary

The Nebraska Danger rolled past the Wyoming Calvary 82-53 on Friday at the Casper Events Center. Kayne Farquharson led the Danger offense with 8 catches for 186 yards and three touchdowns. The Danger improved to 7-4 with the win while Wyoming fell to 1-9. The same two teams will meet in a rematch on Friday at the Heartland Events Center in Grand Island.

Lopers Had Two Indoor All-Americans, Looking for More in Pueblo

The Nebraska-Kearney track & field team will be sending eight men and two women to the 2013 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships May 23-25 in Pueblo, Colo.

For a second straight year, RMAC-member Colorado State-Pueblo hosts this meet at the Neta & Eddie DeRosa ThunderBowl. A top eight finish in any event is good for All-American honors.

In March, Marissa Bongers (3rd/800 meters) and Dillon Schrodt (7th/heptathlon) earned All-American honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Alabama. UNK’s other two qualifiers were Tanner Fruit (13th/5,000 meters) and Mark Seeba (pole vault).

Last May, Paul Pape (8th/800) and Marty Molina (7th/triple jump) cracked the top eight. Molina also was an All-American in 2012 (indoors & outdoors) in the triple.
